"Clear information about the work on our dormer. Good communication. A partly less successful result was still repaired perfectly."
Cost of painting window frames: price each and extras
A small attic window and a sliding patio door are both called a frame, which is exactly why a price each only tells half the story.
- Indoors: from €35 each
- Outdoors: from €50 each
- Two top coats after preparation
- Wood rot: from €50 per spot

BeforeAfter
Painting window frames costs from €35 each indoors and from €50 each outdoors as a national market guide. Size, glazing bars, glazing beads and the condition of the wood decide where your frame ends up above that lower limit. At MJA Allround Bouw you get one fixed price for all frames after the site visit.
Updated on 30 October 2026Cost per window frame: the lower limit
Nationally, a frame starts from €35 each indoors and from €50 each outdoors. Outdoors is higher because there is more preparation and the hourly rate is higher. If repairs come on top, that is a separate item.
| Item | Market guide |
|---|---|
| Window frame, interior | from €35 each |
| Window frame, exterior | from €50 each |
| Hourly rate, interior | from €30 per hour |
| Hourly rate, exterior | from €40 per hour |
| Wood rot repair | from €50 per spot |
What counts as one window frame?
This is where comparisons often go wrong. One painter counts a double window as one frame, another as two. A sliding patio door with side lights is far more work than a toilet window, while both can appear on a quote as a single item.
So always ask what is counted per item, and whether the front door with a fanlight counts. We write it down per facade or per room, with what will be done to each. Then you can check it simply by walking round your house.

Example: how to count your own window frames
An example based on the from-prices, not on your home: eight frames outdoors and four indoors. Outdoors that is eight times from €50, so from €400. Indoors it is four times from €35, so from €140. Together from €540.
If the wood on three exterior frames also has to be repaired, at least three times from €50 comes on top, so from €150. That shows straight away why the condition of the wood matters more than the number. On a single rotten sill, the repair can already cost more than painting that frame.
Where window frames in Friesland fail first
Water runs downwards, so the bottom sill takes the most punishment. Then come the corners, where the wood joint can open up. On south and west facades that happens sooner here, because of the wind and damp from that direction.
On our page when to paint your window frames the warning signs are set out. Hairline cracks in the corners and paint that is blistering are a reason not to wait another year. In Leeuwarden we did all the window frames and doors with wood rot repair, because repairing made more sense there than just painting over.
What we want to see from you
Walk round the house once and take an overview photo of each facade. Then take a close-up of the bottom of a few frames, especially on the south and west side. Next, count how many frames there are and note whether they have glazing bars or fanlights.
Also tell us which colour is on them now and whether you want to change it. If you are unsure about colour, you can already read about RAL 9010 or cream white and anthracite in RAL 7016. At the site visit we probe the doubtful spots and discuss colours on the facade itself.
Five things that steer the price per frame
- Glazing bars and glazing beads. Every pane has to be sanded and masked separately.
- Height. Upstairs you need scaffolding or a ladder. Our own scaffolding has a fixed price for putting it up and taking it down.
- Sealant work. Old, cracked sealant joints have to come out before new ones go in.
- Colour change. Going from dark to white often needs more coverage than white over white.
- Gloss. High gloss shows every imperfection and so needs tighter sanding than satin.
Planning window frames on the outside
You paint window frames outdoors when it is dry, between 5 and 30 degrees Celsius, and with humidity below 85 percent. Because the windows have to be able to stay open for a while to dry, a dry spell is all the more welcome. On painting weather in Friesland you can read how many suitable days there are each month.
Interior frames do not depend on the weather. You can have them done in winter too, or at the same time as the walls in that room. That saves you a separate appointment.

Our way of painting window frames
Degrease, sand with Festool at 150, 180 and 240 grit, prime, fill, seal and apply two top coats. In Bolsward that is how we set up exterior doors, with two coats of Primer Express and Rubbol Satura 9010 satin. We repair rot in a stile or sill with two-part repair filler from Repair Care, or we let in a new piece.
On the page about painting window frames and doors you can read the whole approach. We are members of OnderhoudNL and a recognised training company, and the guarantee period is simply stated in the quote.

Frequently asked questions
The questions we get most often, with an honest answer.
What does it cost to paint a window frame outside?
The national market guide is from €50 each. How big the frame is, how high it sits and the condition of the wood decide what it comes to for you. With us you get a fixed price for that after the site visit.
Do the window frames have to be stripped bare first?
Not always. If the old paint is still firmly attached, we sand it and build on it. If the paint is coming off or the surface is poor, it goes back to a firm surface.
Can I leave the windows open while you paint?
While the paint dries, the windows actually need to stay open for a while, otherwise they stick to the frame. At the site visit we agree when each side is due, so you can allow for it.
Can I have window frames painted in a different colour?
Yes, that is possible, including anthracite or black. A colour change may need an extra coat, and dark colours get warmer in the sun. We discuss that with you before the colour goes on the quote.
Is painting still worthwhile if there is wood rot in the frame?
Only if the rot is dealt with first. Painting over soft wood actually seals the damp in. We remove the rotten parts back to sound wood and repair, or let in a new piece, and only then do we paint.
