Painter Heerenveen: from peat town to new-build estate

Heerenveen came into being in the sixteenth century around peat digging, and the canals that carried the peat away, such as the Heerenveense Kanaal and the Compagnonsvaart, can still be seen. Later came Crackstate, the Thialf ice stadium and the sc Heerenveen stadium, and the town grew considerably.

On soft ground a house can move a little. You see that in cracks in sealant joints and in the corners of window frames, where water then finds a way in. We then work from our own scaffolding with a fixed price for erecting and dismantling, so no daily hire is added.

In Skoatterwâld and other newer parts of the town it is often about interior work. Handover is often ready for wallpaper or ready for wall paint, and that is not yet a finished home. We apply glass fibre wallpaper or lining paper (renovlies) where small cracks need hiding, and paint walls and ceilings in the colour you want. Just south of the town lies Oranjewoud, with country estates, old trees and Museum Belvédère. Under such trees a façade stays damp for a long time and wood gets grime sooner, so cleaning is a fixed first step there. A little further north lies Akkrum, on the Boarn, where many homes stand close to the water. Gorredijk in Opsterland lies on the Compagnonsvaart, with an old centre along the water. And Oudeschoot almost merges with Heerenveen, with homes that in many ways resemble those in town.

For new-build we want to know what was done at handover: ready for wallpaper or ready for wall paint, and how big the rooms are. A floor plan is handy here. The older the house, the more prep is usually needed. After that come height, number of window frames and the amount of wood rot. A young house with only wall painting is therefore a very different job from a 1930s house with ten years of overdue maintenance.
