In short

Lining paper (renovlies) and glass fibre wallpaper give an uneven or slightly cracked wall a smooth surface to paint over, while wallpaper brings its own pattern or texture. Nationally, fitting starts from €15 per m2 as a market indication. At MJA Allround Bouw we look at your wall first and you get a fixed price, including any painting.

Wallpaper and lining paper: which wall gets what?

You choose wallpaper for the look: a pattern, a texture or a feature wall. You choose lining paper (renovlies) and glass fibre wallpaper for a smooth, calm surface that is then painted. We fit all three and include the painting straight away, so you have one point of contact for the whole wall.

The substrate decides which preparation is needed. That is why we look at the wall first, discuss the end result you have in mind and then put it in a fixed quote. Sometimes a good coat of paint turns out to be enough. Then you do not have to spend money on a layer you do not need, and we will tell you so.

Why the wall comes first

Lining paper or wallpaper on a poor wall soon shows what is underneath. Old wallpaper residue leaves edges, loose paint takes the new layer with it, and a damp patch comes through any finish. That is why we first remove old wallpaper and loose layers, fill holes and unevenness and, where needed, apply a primer to the wall.

Lining paper and glass fibre can hide small cracks, but not a wall that is still moving or damp. The same goes for walls that are well out of plumb. If in doubt, look at the moisture first. For walls in new builds something else matters, namely whether the wall was delivered ready for wallpaper or ready for sprayed finish. That difference is covered in preparing walls in new builds.

On a wall with a lot of side light, lining paper is often the calmest choice. In a hallway or children's room where things get rough, glass fibre is more obvious. A patterned wallpaper suits a wall that needs to give the room a character of its own.

Lining paper: a calm, smooth wall

Lining paper (renovlies) is a thick non-woven sheet that is glued to the wall. The wall is pasted, the strips are butted tightly together and then we paint everything. The result is a closed, even surface, without the hairline cracks and repair spots you would otherwise keep seeing.

It works well on older walls with small cracks, or on walls that have had a lot of patching over the years. After painting you no longer see the seams, if the strips are well placed and the substrate is right. That last condition is the whole story. How it goes step by step, and what to look out for in your own home, is covered in having lining paper fitted.

Glass fibre wallpaper with paintwork

Glass fibre wallpaper is stronger than lining paper and has a light woven texture that stays visible after painting. In some places you like to see that, in others not, so we look at that together. It is a sensible choice in rooms where walls take a lot of punishment, or for new-build walls that need to be smooth quickly.

In a new-build apartment of 150 m2 we hung glass fibre wallpaper and did all the paintwork as well, so the resident was done in one go. The customer mentioned that in a review too. Which texture you can choose and how many coats are needed, you can read in painting glass fibre wallpaper. If you want the wall to have no texture, lining paper is the better choice and we say so beforehand.

New builds: delivered ready to move in

In a new-build home the walls are usually delivered ready for wallpaper or ready for sprayed finish. Those are two different things. Ready for sprayed finish is smoother and can often be painted straight away after a quick check. Ready for wallpaper is rougher, and there a layer of lining paper or glass fibre is often the cheapest route to a calm wall.

We can make the whole home ready to move into: walls, ceilings, hallway and bedrooms. More about the approach is in painting a new-build home. Watch the VAT: on a new build less than two years after first use, 21 percent applies to the painting. If you plan the work before you move in, you do have the advantage that the rooms are still empty.

This helps us make a good quote quickly

For wall finishing, the number of square metres matters less than what is on the wall. So please give us this information beforehand:

  • Your town and the period you want.
  • Which rooms are involved and their dimensions, with the height.
  • Photos of each wall plus close-ups of cracks, stains and old layers.
  • What is on it now: paint, old wallpaper, textured plaster or nothing.
  • Whether the wall is ready for wallpaper or ready for sprayed finish, for a new build.
  • The end result you want: smooth, textured or a particular wallpaper.

Have you chosen wallpaper yourself? Give us the name or send the link, because the pattern determines how much cutting and waste there is. At the site visit we look at the wall with you.

What wallpaper and lining paper cost

As a national market indication, fitting lining paper or glass fibre starts from €15 per m2, and painting walls also from €15 per m2. These are market figures and not our prices. At MJA you get a fixed price once we have looked at your wall. That price is mainly set by:

  • The condition of the wall and how much preparation is needed.
  • Removing old wallpaper or loose layers.
  • The number of corners, windows and heights.
  • The material, especially with your own patterned wallpaper.

A full explanation is in what lining paper costs. Wallpaper may fall under a different VAT rate than painting, which is why we list it item by item on the quote.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we get most often, with an honest answer.

What is the difference between lining paper and glass fibre wallpaper?

Lining paper is a smooth non-woven sheet that gives an even surface. Glass fibre wallpaper is sturdier and keeps a light texture after painting. At the site visit we look at what suits your wall and your wishes best.

Can lining paper go over existing wallpaper?

We usually advise against it. Old wallpaper can come loose from the moisture in the paste, and then it pulls the new layer with it. We prefer to remove it first, so you do not have to start over after a while.

Does lining paper always have to be painted?

Yes, lining paper is meant to be painted over and only gets its crisp look that way. That is why we include the painting in the quote. If you choose a colour, we discuss it straight away.

Does lining paper solve cracks in the wall?

Small hairline cracks disappear under it. With a crack that keeps moving or a damp patch, the cause has to be fixed first. We tell you honestly at the site visit, before anything goes on the wall.

What does lining paper cost per square metre?

As a national market indication, fitting starts from €15 per m2, separate from the painting. The preparation and the condition of the wall decide what it comes to for you. With us you get a fixed price after the site visit.

Can I choose the wallpaper myself?

Yes, you can choose wallpaper yourself and we fit it. Send the name or a link, so that we can include the pattern and the waste in the quote. A different material or a different VAT rate we list item by item on the quote.

Wondering what your paintwork will cost?

Send your plans and a few photos. Mohamed takes a look and you get a fixed quote.
