About this project
In Leeuwarden we renovated and protected a house together with BW Coatings. The wood rot was repaired first, then all window frames and doors were painted with paint from Herfst & Helder. The order is the heart of it here: no new paint on timber that is not in order yet.
Painting window frames in Leeuwarden: timber in order first
On this house in Leeuwarden we did not just paint, we repaired the timber first. Together with BW Coatings everything was dealt with, from wood rot repair to the complete painting of all frames and doors. The paint comes from Herfst & Helder. In the photos you can see the scaffolding on the side facade, the taped-off windows with fresh primer and the exterior door during finishing.
That order is no detail. Paint is a protective layer, not a repair. If soft timber is still underneath, the new coat will come loose there. When frames are due you can often tell from flaking paint and open corner joints.
All the frames at once, or only the worst?
In a city like Leeuwarden the facades are not equally exposed everywhere. One side gets rain and wind from the south-west, the other side much less. As a result one frame needs repair while another still looks reasonable. Even so, we chose to do everything in one go here, so the whole house has the same look and the same protection again.
It is practical too: the scaffolding is already up and the colour is the same everywhere. If you want to have window frames and doors painted, we will discuss whether everything has to be done at once or whether it can be phased.
What sets the price of your window frames
Send us the number of frames and doors, a photo of each facade and a close-up of spots where the paint is flaking. Also say whether you are keeping the same colour. A colour change sometimes needs an extra coat. If there is rot in the bottom rails, it appears as a separate item on the quote.
Four things set the amount: the number of pieces, the amount of wood rot, the access and the condition of the old paint. The national market indication is from €50 per exterior window frame, and you can read more about those costs separately. With us you get a fixed price after the site visit.

How we tackled it
Inspection: every frame checked separately
When all the frames and doors are part of the job, you check them all. At a site visit we feel the corners and bottom rails, and probe where the timber looks suspect. After that it is clear where repair comes first and what only needs preparation and paint.
Execution: repair, primer, topcoat
The wood rot was dealt with first. The painting followed: taping off the windows, priming and topcoating with paint from Herfst & Helder. The scaffolding on the side facade means the top frames get exactly the same treatment as the bottom ones. You can see the tape and primer in the photos.
Handover: past every door and window
We walk past every frame and every exterior door together. That is also the moment to check that doors and windows close properly again and that the topcoat is crisp everywhere. Only when that is right is the job finished for us.

Is it better to have the wood rot repaired first and paint later?
No, it is better to do it in one line. Repaired timber has to be built up and protected quickly, otherwise it stands vulnerable in wind and weather. That is why we did it back to back in Leeuwarden.
How do I know if my window frames are rotten?
Look for flaking paint, open joints and soft spots by the bottom rail. Gently probe with a screwdriver: if it sinks in, the timber is affected. If you are unsure, send a photo or let us take a look.
