About this project

On this 1930s house in Friesland the exterior painting was dealt with thoroughly, for BW Coatings. We sanded everything with Festool in grits 150, 180 and 240, repaired the woodwork where needed and finished in RAL 9010 high gloss with paint from Herfst & Helder. The authentic character was kept.

Painting a 1930s house in Friesland: the result

This is major maintenance on a characteristic 1930s house, carried out for BW Coatings, supplier of paint and materials. The exterior painting was dealt with thoroughly and brought back to top condition. From weathered and dull to fresh, glossy white.

The colour is RAL 9010 high gloss, a classic white. The paint comes from Herfst & Helder. The authentic character of the house was kept: the bay, the arched entrance and the doors are the same ones, just neat again. You can see them in the photos, along with the garden doors in primer and the double doors at the back. Curious about the difference with cream white? Read RAL 9010 or cream white.

Three grits of sanding: why high gloss demands it

High gloss shows every flaw, and an old house has plenty. That is why the sanding here was done in three steps: grit 150 takes off the coarse material, 180 and 240 make it flat for the primer. That is more work than sanding once, but you see it later in the reflection. More on that at preparation, sanding and priming.

With an old house like this you also have to think about what lies underneath. Old paint can contain lead, and if in doubt you do not sand dry. You agree that before the machine goes on.

Got a 1930s house too? Send this along

Photos of the front facade, the bay, the entrance and the back are handy, along with a close-up of the sills. Also say when it was last painted. At the site visit we discuss whether you keep the colours, or whether white with high gloss suits you. If there is a lot of fine profile work in the entrance or the bay, we like to see that up close.

The amount of profile work, the preparation and the timber repair mainly set the price. The national market indication for exterior painting is from €35 per m2. At MJA you get a fixed price after the site visit. For houses that are two years old or older, painting carries 9 percent Dutch VAT, see VAT on painting work.

Old houses need patience, and we have it

There are many 1930s houses in Friesland, and we come across them regularly. See also the house in Langweer. On a job like this Mohamed is your permanent point of contact. We sand with our own Festool equipment, and we are a member of OnderhoudNL and a recognised training company.

The approach

How we tackled it

Inspection: what is weathered, what is damaged?

On an old house dull paint does not tell the whole story. We therefore also look at sills and undersides, where timber is affected first. In the photos you can see one such damaged sill. After that it is clear where repair is needed before any paint goes on.

Execution: sanding in three steps

Everything was fully sanded with a Festool sander, moving up from grit 150 to 180 and 240. A thorough pretreatment followed, repair of the woodwork where needed, and primer on the garden doors, among other things. The topcoat is high gloss RAL 9010 from Herfst & Helder.

Handover: fresh, and still the same house

The bay, the arched entrance and the double doors at the back are crisp in white again. The house looks fresh, but its character has stayed the same. We go through the work together so the details get seen too.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 1930s house stay recognisable after a white repaint?

Yes, as long as you leave the shape and the details alone. On this house the authentic character was kept and mainly the paintwork was renewed. If you want a different colour, we discuss how it sits with the house.

Why high gloss on an old house?

High gloss gives a fresh, deep look and goes well with classic details. It does show flaws sooner, so the preparation has to be right. That is why the sanding here used three grits.

What do you do if there is lead in the old paint?

If in doubt, we do not sand dry. White lead has been banned indoors since 1939 and outdoors since 2009, so in old houses it can sit under the layers. We then discuss in advance how we will handle the work safely.
