"Great painter! Will become our regular contractor."
Bespoke Wall Unit in Friesland, Designed and Painted
This is an own project by Mohamed, carried out at home in Friesland. The wall unit was self-designed, built and firmly mounted, and the walls were crisply painted in warm brown and white. The space works as a walk-in closet and office. It shows what small carpentry and painting do together.
Bespoke wall unit in Friesland: this is our own work
This project is not a client job but was made at home. Mohamed designed this wall unit, built it and painted the walls around it. The combination of warm brown and white gives the space atmosphere straight away. Everything is neatly made to measure and firmly mounted.
The space is set up as a walk-in closet and office. For us it is a good example of what is possible when small carpentry and interior painting come together.
Why building and painting go better together
A wall unit placed against a wall has to fit with what is already there. If a colour goes behind the shelves, that wall has to be right first, because later you can no longer reach it properly. That is the reason carpentry and painting are best kept in one hand: the order then comes out right by itself.
A warm colour on the wall also asks for a crisp transition to the white. At having walls painted you can read how we handle that. And on a flat surface every flaw shows sooner, so we always look at that first.
Something bespoke in your home? This is what we want to know
Send a photo of the wall and the dimensions of the space, and tell us what you want to use the unit for. If you have a sketch or an example, include it. Discuss the colours too, because they make the difference here. Also think about what will go on the shelves, because that decides the size and the strength.
The price depends on the size, the material and whether the walls are included. For the painting the national market indication is from €15 per m2 for walls, see also what interior painting costs. Carpentry can fall under a different Dutch VAT rate, so we put that per item on the quote. You get a fixed price after the site visit.
Mohamed at work
In this project you can see how we look at work: with an eye for detail, even when it is our own home. You see that in the finish of the small things. At MJA Allround Bouw the person who makes your quote, Mohamed, is also the one who checks the work. We do small carpentry on the side when it fits, next to painting and wallpaper and lining paper (renovlies).

How we tackled it
Inspection: what must the space do?
There was no client asking for something here, we were our own client. The question was simple: the space has to work as a walk-in closet and as an office. That decides the layout of the shelves, and so the design of the unit.
Execution: building and painting in one hand
The unit was built to measure and firmly mounted. The walls were crisply painted in warm brown and white, with the wall as the backdrop for the white shelves. Everything was made and finished by hand, down to the last brushstroke.
Handover: function and look
In the photos you see the unit without and with its contents. The white shelves stand out against the brown wall, and that gives atmosphere straight away. The space is now a usable combination of storage and work, with an eye for the finish.

"Arrived at roughly the agreed time. Friendly introduction. Delivered good work."
"After a small miscommunication at the start, MJA Allround did a fantastic job. The garage was painted. They neatly masked and lightly sanded everything first and used a lovely deep matt black paint."

"These really are craftsmen who know their trade. Our house badly needed work, it had not been maintained for 10 years. They explained everything well. Once they started they found a lot of wood rot, it was shocking, but thanks to MJA Allround Bouw our house looks sharp and beautiful again."
"This craftsman delivers quality work. Very happy with the job. Agreements are kept and it was finished within the agreed time."
"I recently got the keys to my new-build flat and three craftsmen applied glass fibre wallpaper and painted everything expertly (about 150 m2)."
"The fascia boards had to be replaced at short notice. MJA Allround Bouw responded very quickly and delivered excellent work. Their advice and communication were also very good."

Frequently asked questions
Do you also make bespoke units for clients?
Small carpentry is part of what we do. This unit is an own project, so do ask whether your idea fits. Send a sketch or a photo and we will take a look.
Can I include the wall colour straight away?
Yes, that is exactly what makes this project strong. At the site visit we discuss the colour and the order, so the wall is done before the unit goes on.
Does carpentry fall under the same Dutch VAT rate as painting?
Not always. Painting work on a home that is two years old or older falls under 9 percent, but wallpaper and carpentry can fall under a different rate. That is why it is shown per item on the quote.
