What do you pay for interior painting?

Indoors, a painter usually works with three kinds of items: wall paint on walls, wall paint on ceilings and lacquer on window frames, doors and skirting boards. That is why there is more than one price. These are the national from-prices:

ItemMarket guideWhat it usually is
Interior paintingfrom €25 per m2general
Wallsfrom €15 per m2wall paint
Ceilingfrom €18 per m2wall paint
Window frame, interiorfrom €35 eachlacquer
Lining paper (renovlies) or glass fibrefrom €15 per m2applying
Hourly rate, interiorfrom €30 per hoursmall jobs

Worked example for a single room

Purely as an example on the from-prices: a room with 45 m2 of wall and 20 m2 of ceiling. The walls then come to from €675, the ceiling to from €360, together from €1,035. Two interior window frames on top of that is another from €70.

The sum mainly shows how quickly the square metres add up once you count the walls as well. So always measure the walls, not the floor. A room with 20 m2 of floor quickly has more than double that in wall area. What the job really involves after masking and preparation, we only see in the room itself.

Where interior work costs more than you think

The paint is rarely the problem, the surface is. Hairline cracks in an old ceiling, walls with leftover wallpaper glue or a dark colour that has to go all mean extra work. Sometimes applying lining paper (renovlies) is then the sensible choice, because it hides small cracks and you do not have to fill everything.

The colour counts too. One of our customers chose a deep matt black for the garage. Matt hides more than high gloss, but a dark colour like that calls for tight preparation and a steady hand, because every join can stay visible. We discuss that kind of choice beforehand, so you see it back in the quote.

Tell us this, and we can work it out faster

  • which rooms you want done, and how high the ceilings are;
  • photos of walls, ceilings and window frames, including cracks and stains;
  • whether there is wallpaper, or whether it is bare or painted;
  • whether you will stay in the house during the work;
  • the colours you have in mind, or whether you would like advice on them.

For new-build homes we also ask whether the walls were delivered ready for wallpaper or ready for paint. That makes a big difference to the preparation. You can read more about it at preparing walls in a new-build home.

The factors that matter most

  • Empty or lived in. In an empty house we can work through faster than between the furniture.
  • Height and shape. An attic with knee walls and a dormer has many corners and joins. A stairwell usually needs a separate set-up.
  • Choice of colour. Several colours in one room means more masking and crisp transitions.
  • Type of paint. Water-based or solvent-based lacquer makes a difference in drying time and smell, and so in how you can use the room in the meantime.
  • Scale. A whole house in one go is more efficient than separate rooms on separate days.

No weather to worry about, but a choice of timing

Interior work does not depend on the weather, so you can plan it for when it suits you. Many people combine it with a move or a renovation, because the rooms are already empty then. In a new-build home you ideally want it done before the floor goes in, so there is less to mask.

The cold season is also fine for interior work, as long as the room is heated and you can ventilate. There is more on that at painting in winter. If the outside also needs doing, that is a good combination: indoors when it is raw, and outdoors when it is dry. For that, see our page about painting weather in Friesland.

Indoors for earlier customers

In Workum we did an interior renovation from ceiling to skirting boards. A customer with a new-build apartment of 150 m2 chose glass fibre wallpaper and wall paint, and in one new-build home we delivered move-in ready. A made-to-measure wall cupboard is also part of what we do indoors, thanks to our small-scale carpentry.

In their reviews, customers mainly mention the thinking along on colours and the neat masking. That is also what you notice first indoors: a crisp line between wall and ceiling, and no splashes on the skirting boards.

Having your rooms looked at

Let us know which rooms are involved, and we will arrange a site visit and discuss the colours there and then. You then receive a fixed quote covering the agreed work. There is more about our approach at interior painting in Friesland.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we get most often, with an honest answer.

What does it cost to have a living room painted?

That depends on the number of square metres of wall and ceiling and on their condition. The national market guide is from €15 per m2 for walls and from €18 per m2 for ceilings. After the site visit you get a fixed price.

Do I have to empty the room myself?

It is not strictly necessary, but it saves work if small items and breakable things are out of the way. We group large furniture together in consultation with you and cover it. The quote states what we agree.

How long can I not use a room?

That depends on the preparation and the number of coats. Wall paint is often finished quickly, while lacquer needs drying time between coats. At the site visit we agree when each room is due.

Do you also help with choosing colours?

Yes, we discuss colours at the site visit. Customers often mention that thinking along in their reviews too. If you already have something in mind, put it in your request, and we will look together at how it sits in the light of your room.

What is cheaper: painting or wallpapering?

In the national market guide, walls and lining paper (renovlies) or glass fibre both start from €15 per m2, but with wallpaper there is usually wall paint on top as well. Whether that is needed depends on the condition of your walls. We only see that on site.
