Painter Hemelum, smaller jobs welcome too

Hemelum lies just south of Koudum, on the edge of Gaasterland. This is the corner of the country MJA Allround Bouw comes from: Mirns is not far away. The region used to be called Hemelumer Oldeferd, after this village.

For you, that short distance is practical. A site visit is quickly arranged and a small job is not a whole undertaking. So you don't have to wait until the whole house is due before you call us.

Everyone knows them: the front door that has gone dull, that one garage door, the frame on the south side where the paint is coming off. Too small to make a big project of, too visible to leave. We simply take on that kind of work.

With a front door it is all about the finish: you see it up close every day. A garage door can take somewhat tougher treatment. One of our customers chose a garage in deep matt black. Which colour and gloss suit you, we discuss in advance.

Small jobs get the same preparation from us as a whole facade. First degreasing and sanding, with Festool at grits 150, 180 and 240. Then priming, filling and sealing where needed, and two top coats. The paint needs to dry between those steps, so a door isn't opened and closed again within an hour.

High gloss shows imperfections sooner than satin. What suits your door depends on the condition of the wood and the look you want.

To the south the forest of Gaasterland begins, to the north the open land towards the Fluessen. You notice that in your paint. A house with many trees around it dries slowly and gets green growth sooner on the north side. A detached house in the open takes the full wind and sun on its south and west facades.

How often painting is needed therefore differs from house to house. As a rule of thumb, 6 to 8 years applies for opaque exterior paintwork, but we prefer to look at what is really happening on your facade.

For a single door or frame it is usually simple. Send a photo of the whole thing and one of the bottom or the corner where it is going wrong. Tell us which colour you want and whether the door is made of wood.

If it involves more, add the year of construction and the measurements. During the site visit we check whether anything is going on under the paint. If we find something, we discuss it before we put anything in the quote.

If you are unsure whether something is worth doing, just message a photo. Then you hear whether it is a matter of sanding and painting, or whether there is more to it. You get that honest answer even if it turns out it can wait another year.

For a small job, time is what counts most. Nationally, the market indication for outdoor work is an hourly rate from €40 and an exterior frame from €50 each. If wood rot comes on top, that is from €50 per spot. These are not MJA rates, but a guide to compare with.
