Updated on 30 October 2026Living on the Tjeukemeer, painting with the weather
Oosterzee lies on the south side of the Tjeukemeer, one of the large Frisian lakes. Anyone living here knows the wind that comes across the open water. For your exterior painting that means: the wood gets more damp and wind than a few streets inland.
Our answer is not a miracle paint, but a good surface and tight planning. How we handle water is at painting a house on the water. If you are looking towards Lemmer, see the painter in Lemmer.
Dew is the silent opponent here
On a lovely morning by the lake the wood can still be wet with dew while it looks dry. Paint on damp wood bonds badly, and you only see that a year later in blisters and flaking.
That is why by the water we do not start by the clock, but by the wood. According to the data sheet of, for example, Sigma S2U Satin, you work outside between 5 and 30 degrees, at humidity of at most 85 percent, and dry. Around the water that is in practice often only the case later in the morning.

Which months work best here
For a house by the lake, not all dry days are really painting days, because a morning by the water does not always count. On our page about painting weather in Friesland you can see per month how many suitable painting days were measured in Stavoren and Leeuwarden.
That helps with planning. So ask for a quote in good time, then we can put the work in a good period and you do not have to hope for a fine autumn. For autumn we more readily choose one side at a time, so nothing is left half open when the rain comes.
High gloss by the water, or satin gloss after all?
By the water you often see your house from the other side, in full light. High gloss gives a crisp look, but shows imperfections sooner, especially on old wood. Satin gloss is calmer and more forgiving. Sikkens supplies what we use here for both: Rubbol XD High Gloss or Rubbol Satura 9010 satin gloss.
At high gloss or satin gloss you can read the pros and cons. At the site visit we look together at the façade to see which gives the best result on your wood.
Show us the waterside
Send photos of all walls, and especially of the side facing the water, because that is often the hardest to reach. Is there a jetty, or does a bank lie right against the house? Then we would like to know that beforehand.
Also say when you last had it painted and where you see something coming off. If the house can only be seen well from the water, that is useful to know too. If you have a jetty, boathouse or shed by the water that should be included, take a photo of that as well, because then we include it in the quote in one go. We have a cherry picker where it is needed, and our own scaffolding for the rest.

Why the price can differ here
Access is often the biggest factor here, followed by the condition of the wood. A side that cannot be reached from the bank calls for other equipment. You see that in the price, not in the paint. The number of window frames and the amount of wood on the façade count too.
The national market guide for exterior painting starts from €35 per m2, with an hourly rate outdoors from €40. At MJA you get a fixed price after the site visit for the agreed work. At what exterior painting costs you can see what to expect.

Frequently asked questions
The questions we get most often, with an honest answer.
How long does paint last on a house by the lake?
Opaque exterior paintwork lasts 6 to 8 years as a rule of thumb, and on the side that takes the most wind and sun often a little less. At the site visit we look at what is realistic for your house.
Can you also do the side facing the water?
Often yes, with scaffolding or a cherry picker, but sometimes the bank is a challenge. So send a photo of that side beforehand.
When is a good moment for exterior work?
Mainly in the dry months with temperatures above 5 degrees. Because the diary fills up quickly then, it is smart to ask early in the year.
Is the wind across the lake bad for the paint?
Wind and damp mostly put demands on the joints and the bottom edges of the wood. With good prep and enough coats you keep that better under control.
