Painting a gable house in Heerenveen: what was done
This house in Heerenveen has a tall pointed gable with white window frames set in dark brick. We did the exterior painting, with Sikkens as the paint. It was not only the windows: the bay with garden doors and the ceiling of the canopy were crisply finished too.
That combination is exactly what makes the project interesting. On one house you see work at height, large areas of glass and a ceiling that has to look right above your head. In the photos you can see it up close.
What makes a pointed gable different from an ordinary facade
A pointed gable is tall and narrows to a point. You do not reach the top sections with a ladder, you work from scaffolding. That makes access a considerable item, especially if you have to hire that scaffolding. We have our own equipment for work at height, with a fixed price for putting it up and taking it down.
White on dark brick also forgives very little. Every crooked line along the brickwork stands out. Wind and rain mostly hit the south and west sides, so as a rule of thumb those come due sooner, as you can read at how often you need to paint outside.
Canopy or bay as well? Tell us in advance
Take photos of all sides of the house, including the top of the gable. Say whether a canopy, bay or extension is part of it, because those are separate items on the quote. If the canopy is included, also say whether there are lights in the ceiling, because we have to work around them. If you do not know the height, a photo of the whole facade is enough.

How we tackled it
Inspection: from the ridge to the garden doors
You look at a pointed gable from top to bottom. The parts by the ridge take the most wind and are hard to judge from the ground. At the site visit we also include the bay and the canopy, and discuss which parts take part.
Execution: white, in a fixed order
The woodwork is prepared and then finished in white with Sikkens. Window frames, garden doors and the bay get the same crisp line. The canopy ceiling needs extra care, because you work above your head there and streaks show straight away in the gloss.
Handover: looking upwards too
When we go through the work we do not only look at eye level. The canopy ceiling and the lines around the high windows get their turn too. In the photos you can see how the finish reflects the sky and the light, that is how crisp it has to be.

Usually yes, because the top is too high to reach safely with a ladder. We have our own scaffolding, so you pay a fixed price for putting it up and taking it down. At the site visit we say what your facade needs.
