"Clear information about the work on our dormer. Good communication. A partly less successful result was still repaired perfectly."
Replacing Timber Cladding and Barge Boards in Friesland
On this renovation in Friesland the timber cladding and barge boards were finished. We took out the old boards, fitted new ones crisply and finished everything with Sikkens high gloss. When paint is in that poor a state, another coat on top makes no sense any more. Then replacing is the honest choice.
Replacing timber cladding and barge boards: what happened
On this house in Friesland the timber cladding and barge boards were worn out. The paint was flaking and the timber was weathered. We took out the old boards, fitted new ones and finished everything with Sikkens high gloss. From worn out to like new again.
You can see the difference best in the before and after photo of the top gable. We often do replacing fascia boards and barge boards, as well as painting facade cladding. Replacing is not the default: first we check whether the timber can still be saved. In the other photos you can see the scaffolding and the old boards up close, with paint coming off in pieces.
When painting is no longer enough
Cladding boards are thin and sit in wind and weather. When the paint flakes, moisture gets into the timber, and that happens quite quickly. At some point the timber is so open that a new coat of paint no longer bonds well. Then you pay for painting that does not last long. You can see clearly in the photos what that looks like.
Barge boards have the same problem, but in a place you can hardly see, right under the roof edge. In Friesland, with plenty of wind from the south-west, they take a lot of punishment. At recognising wood rot you can read what to look out for yourself.
How we arrive at a price for your facade
Send a photo of the whole facade and close-ups of the worst spots. Give an idea of how many running metres it is, if you know, and whether there are window frames in the facade too. At the site visit we measure the rest.
The price depends on the length, the height, the chosen material and what comes to light under the old boards. The national market indication for replacing fascia boards is from €55 per running metre. With us it is a fixed price after the site visit. Our own scaffolding is included in that as a fixed item, so no rental per day.
Carpentry and paint from one address
What makes jobs like this easy: everything comes from us. You do not have to coordinate a carpenter and a painter. Mohamed arranges both and is your point of contact. Also look at the fascia boards from the winter job for another example.
On Google we are rated 4.8 from 25 reviews, and we are a member of OnderhoudNL. Unsure whether your facade can still be saved? Send a photo through the quote request and we will tell you what we see.

How we tackled it
Inspection: still savable or finished?
The top gable was flaking badly and the timber under the paint was weathered. At an inspection like this we decide per section what can stay. The outcome here was clear: the cladding and barge boards had to come out, because painting would only hide the problem for a while.
Execution: out, in and finish
From the scaffolding the old boards were taken down and the new cladding and barge boards were fitted crisply. The finish in Sikkens high gloss followed. That way the new timber gets its protection straight away and the facade is one whole again.
Handover: same facade, new boards
In the before and after photo you can see the top gable in both situations: from flaking paint to fresh white boards. When we go through the work we look at the joints with the window frames and along the roof, because that is where it has to be right.

Frequently asked questions
Can timber cladding be repaired instead of replaced?
That is possible if the damage is limited, for example a single loose spot. On this house the timber was weathered across the whole facade, and then replacing is the better choice. We look together first and tell you honestly.
Why high gloss on timber cladding?
On this project we chose Sikkens high gloss, which gives a fresh and crisp look. High gloss does show flaws sooner. Satin is possible too, and we discuss that at the site visit.
Do you need scaffolding for barge boards?
Usually yes, because they sit right under the roof edge. We have our own scaffolding equipment, with a fixed price for putting it up and taking it down. That way you know in advance what that part costs.
