Updated on 30 October 2026What we did in Langweer
In Langweer, on the Langweerder Wielen, we took a 1930s home in hand. Under the old paint there was wood rot in several places, including in the stile of a door. We removed the affected wood back to sound wood, repaired it and then built it up to a crisp coat of lacquer.
The finish was done in Sikkens Express High Gloss, in cream white with antique green. The whole story, with before and after photos, is at our project in Langweer.
Why a 1930s home needs so much attention
A 1930s house is full of details: glazing bars, bay windows, tall window frames, doors with glass. Lovely, but every detail is a joint water can get into. Such a house often has a history of many layers of paint too, and that calls for care. White lead has only been banned outdoors since 2009, so if in doubt we do not sand dry.
In Langweer the water comes on top of that: the Wielen are around the corner, and wind and damp have a free run. The stable door from this project showed that well: the affected wood was under the old paint, and only when opening it up did you see how far it had gone. So do not only look at the outside of the layer.

Repair: when to repair, when to replace?
On this home we looked at which wood could still be saved. With affected spots in stiles and sills, the question is each time whether you can rout it out and fill it with a two-component repair, splice in a piece, or whether the whole section has to be replaced.
That choice depends on how deep it goes and how important the profile is. We explain it at repairing or replacing wood rot. On a 1930s home we try to keep the original shapes as far as possible, because those are what make the house.
Cream white and antique green: how we choose a colour
Cream white with a dark green accent colour suits a 1930s home well, because it looks warm and calm. White is not simply white: between RAL 9010 and cream white there is a clear difference, especially next to warm brick. You can read that at RAL 9010 or cream white.
Want something else? Of course, because it does not always have to be green. At choosing a colour for your façade you can read what to look for. At the site visit we hold colours up against your own wall, because on a card everything looks different from outdoors. A dark accent colour in particular often looks very different in full daylight from what you had imagined indoors.
What we want to see of your house in Langweer
If you also have an older home in this village, send photos of the whole façade and of the spots where the paint is coming off. Photos of the bottom of doors and sills are extra handy, because that is usually where the trouble starts. Also give the year of construction if you know it.
Is your house on the water? Then show that side too, and say whether we can reach it well from the bank. Via WhatsApp on 06 3006 0558 that is done in no time. A fixed quote follows after the site visit.

What decides the price of such a repair
On a home like this the difference lies mainly in the repair: how many spots there are, and how deep they go. You only know for sure after probing. As a national market guide, a spot of wood rot starts from €50, an exterior window frame from €50 each and exterior painting from €35 per m2.
Those are not MJA prices. With us you get a fixed price after the site visit for the agreed work, and on a home that is two years old or older Dutch VAT on the painting is 9 percent. Our scaffolding is our own, with no hire surprise.

Frequently asked questions
The questions we get most often, with an honest answer.
May I see the photos of the project in Langweer?
Yes, they are on our project page, with the situation before and after the repair. That way you can see clearly what the wood looked like and what became of it.
Is high gloss a good choice for an old door?
It gives a strong, crisp look, but shows imperfections sooner. That is why good sanding and filling come first.
How do I know whether my door has wood rot?
Probe the bottom and the corners with a screwdriver. If the wood gives, or the paint comes off, send us a photo and we will look along.
Can I choose a colour other than antique green too?
Of course, that colour belonged to this home. We are happy to think along about what suits your façade and brickwork.
