In short

In Joure and the surrounding area we repair wood rot back to sound wood, and finish the spot so that it doesn't come back. In Langweer we did that on a 1930s house with Sikkens Express High Gloss, in cream white and antique green. Nationally the market starts from €50 per spot; with us you get a fixed price after the site visit.

Step by step: how wood rot repair goes with us

You see a soft spot, or the paint is coming off. We come to look, and if there is rot, it goes like this: probing to find the boundary, routing out back to sound wood, letting it dry, repairing with Repair Care or inserting a piece of wood, sanding, priming and two top coats. It can be that short, but every step is needed.

The whole approach is in our wood rot repair. We work in Joure and the villages around it, and De Fryske Marren is our municipality too. For other work in this corner, look under your painter in Joure.

What came to light in Langweer

In Langweer, close to Joure on the Langweerder Wielen, we tackled a 1930s house. When we opened up the upright of the stable door, the wood under the old paint turned out to be affected. We removed that until we reached sound wood.

After that the door and frames got their repair and Sikkens Express High Gloss, in cream white and antique green. You can see the result in the project in Langweer. This is what we mean by back to sound wood: you don't stop when the spot looks better, but when the wood is really good.

Why 1930s houses around Joure often have this

A house from that time has a lot of small woodwork, with thresholds, panels and glazing beads where moisture easily lingers. There are often decades of paint layers on it, sometimes with lead under the old paint. If a crack then appears in the wrong place, water gets in, and you only see it when the paint starts to bubble.

Around Joure the water plays a part too, with the Langweerder Wielen and the Sneekermeer around the corner, and the wind that comes over them. Small maintenance, replacing sealant in time, and checking at every paint job prevents most of it.

Two-component repair: what it does and doesn't do

Repair Care is a two-component repair resin that is strong and works with the wood. It is good on smaller spots, on corners and on a threshold where enough wood remains. But it is not a miracle cure. If the rot goes too deep or too far, we insert a piece of new wood or replace the whole part.

Where that line lies you can read under repair or replace. On an old door, repairing is often the best choice, because it has character that you can't buy back. And that little stable door from Langweer now stands crisp and green in its place again.

What you can send us

A photo of the spot already helps, preferably close up and from a bit further away. Feel free to probe with a screwdriver yourself and tell us whether it is soft. Mention the year of construction, whether it is a home or an outbuilding, and when it was last painted.

If you are looking for someone who can also take on the rest of the painting, say so. That is the advantage of one company. Then we include the rest of your house at the site visit.

The price of repair, spot by spot

One spot in a threshold is something different from a rotten upright over its full height. The number of spots, the depth and whether a piece of wood has to be inserted determine the hours. Nationally the market cites from €50 per spot. That is a market indication, not a price from us. At MJA you get a fixed price after the site visit, including what we agree.

A complete overview is under the costs of wood rot repair. Business or home? On homes that are two years old or older, the Dutch VAT on painting is 9 percent, carpentry may fall differently and is listed item by item on the quote.

Why the repair must go straight into paint

A repaired spot without paint is an open door for new moisture. That is why we don't leave a week between repairing and priming, certainly not with the water of the Langweerder Wielen and the Sneekermeer close by. In Langweer we used Sikkens Express High Gloss, and a fast-drying paint helps when the dry spells are short.

On a repair like that we sand fine, through ascending grits up to 240, because high gloss shows every imperfection. Anyone walking past that door later shouldn't be able to point out the repair. After that the guarantee period in your quote applies, and it is a matter of checking in time.

Nearby and with clear agreements

Mirns lies in the same municipality, and that means Mohamed can come by quickly for a site visit. You get a fixed quote, no open end. Frequently asked questions

The questions we get most often, with an honest answer.

How do I know it is wood rot and not loose paint?

Gently probe the wood with a screwdriver. If it sinks in easily or crumbles, it is rot. Peeling paint on hard wood is something different, and can be solved with sanding and painting.

Does rot come back after a repair?

Not if all the rot is gone and the spot has been finished closed. That is why we go back to sound wood and check the sealant and the paint layer. Good maintenance afterwards does the rest.

Can I remove the rot myself and let you do the rest?

That is possible, but then we can no longer see what was there, and that makes it hard to assess the repair. We would rather leave it as it is and look at it together.

How quickly must I react if I see rot?

It doesn't have to be tomorrow, but don't put it off for a year. Rot spreads as long as moisture keeps coming in. The sooner we come, the smaller the repair stays.
