Updated on 30 October 2026What we do about wood rot in Sneek
We repair wood rot on frames, doors, thresholds, glazing beads and fascia boards. First we probe through the paint with a screwdriver and find where the wood is soft. Then Mohamed takes the rotten part out back to sound wood, and we repair with Repair Care, a piece of new wood, or replace the whole part. After that the work goes straight on to priming and painting.
You can read that approach in our wood rot repair in Friesland as well. In this city the question is mainly where to look first, and that is what the rest of this page is about. What else we do here you can see under your painter in Sneek.
Five spots we check first in Sneek
- Lower threshold of the front door. Rain splashes up and stays, and by a quay there is even more moisture.
- Bottom of the door upright. End grain soaks up water here, and the paint blisters from below.
- Corner of the window frame. The joint pulls open and water runs inside, which you can barely see from outside.
- Glazing beads on the west side. The sealant lets go, and then the wood behind the bead rots.
- Door to the jetty or shed. It is often close to the water, and rarely gets the attention the front facade gets.
You can check yourself. In recognising wood rot you can read how to spot the first signs, and when it is time to call us.

Why it goes faster here than you think
Between the Geeuw, the canals and the Sneekermeer, wood dries more slowly. Rot needs nothing more than wood that stays damp. A small open seam can become a soft spot within a few years, while the paint on the outside looks reasonable. That is why we often only see wood rot when sanding or painting.
Anyone who has their house checked at every paint job prevents a lot. Touching up in between, keeping the sealant in good order and letting clean water run off the threshold already helps considerably. For a building on the quay that is no luxury.
Repair or replace: the choice per spot
Not every soft spot means a new frame. This is how we weigh it up:
| What we find | What we do |
|---|---|
| Small, shallow spot | Rot out, fill with Repair Care and sand |
| Larger corner or upright | Insert a new piece of wood, close the seams |
| Rot through the whole threshold | Replace the part, redo the junctions |
We do that on advice and after consultation. If it is still repairable, we say so, because an old frame of good wood shouldn't simply be thrown away. More under repair or replace.
A photo already gets us started
Take a photo of the spot, close up and from a step back, so we can see how high and where it is. Gently probe yourself with a screwdriver: if it is soft or crumbly, say so. Also tell us the year of construction and whether the house stands directly on water.
Do you have more spots? Count them roughly and send a photo per spot via WhatsApp or email. On that basis we can see whether it is a small job or a broader site visit, and we plan accordingly.
What wood rot costs in Sneek
The price depends on the number of spots, the depth and whether anything has to be replaced. The painting comes on top of that. Nationally the market starts from €50 per spot of wood rot, and from €50 per exterior frame if it goes into paint. That is a market indication. With us you get a fixed price after the site visit, containing what we have agreed.
Do you find more rot during the work than we could see? Then we discuss that with you first, before going further. The full explanation on costs is under wood rot repair and the costs.

The wood at the back of the yard
On waterside homes around Sneek there is often more than just the house: a shed, a boathouse, a garden room. They rarely get the same attention as the front facade, and that is exactly where the ground or the water is closest to the wood. At the bottom of a shed door and at the uprights on the ground we often see rot first.
So include those little buildings in your photos, even if you don't want anything done to them now. If it is still small, it is repaired in no time while we are there anyway. If you leave it, you at least know what to watch for next year.

Frequently asked questions
The questions we get most often, with an honest answer.
Can I simply paint over wood rot?
No. Then you seal in the moisture and the rot just carries on. First it has to come out back to sound wood, only then can paint go on.
Does my frame have to come out if there is rot in it?
Usually not. Often a spot can be repaired with Repair Care or a piece of new wood. Only when the rot runs through the whole construction do we advise replacing.
How long does a repair take?
A small spot is usually done quickly, but the layers have to dry and the work still has to be finished with a top coat. After the site visit we can tell you properly.
Will the repair show after painting?
Not if the repair is carried out properly and sanded smooth. With high gloss you have to be extra careful about that, and we are. That way the spot stays crisp after the top coat too.
