Exterior painting in Sneek, between canal and lake

In Sneek we paint frames, doors, fascia boards, cladding and dormers, for private customers and small businesses. Mohamed comes to look first, because the job differs greatly from address to address. A narrow canal-side house calls for something different from a 1950s terraced house or a house with a jetty and boat on the Houkesloot.

What stays the same everywhere is the work under the paint: degreasing, sanding, removing rot, priming, filling, sealing and two top coats. No salt as on the coast, but damp air all day long. Wood absorbs that moisture through the places where the paint layer is thin or open: the end grain of a threshold, the seam under a glazing bead, the bottom of a door. Then the sun drives it out of the wood again and the paint starts to blister.

If your facade faces south-west onto open water, nothing stands between the wind and your woodwork either. As a rule of thumb opaque exterior paintwork lasts 6 to 8 years, but on a facade like that count on the short end of that. The north side of the same house can often wait longer, and that saves money if you plan it facade by facade.

In Sneek we painted a home with the woodwork in RAL 7016 and RAL 9010, the front door in anthracite high gloss. You can see what that looks like in the project in Sneek. That combination looks good on red and dark brick, and white keeps the windows light.

Do watch two things. A dark colour heats up more in the sun, so wood moves more. And high gloss shows every imperfection, so the sanding has to be right. If you are unsure about that dark shade, a test patch on your own facade is the best proof. At the site visit Mohamed brings colour samples and looks at them with you.

We did that Sneek project in autumn, and that works as long as the weather plays along. Outdoors we paint at 5 to 30 degrees, humidity up to 85 percent and dry wood. By the water the dew stays on the frames longer in the morning, so such a day starts later with paint and earlier with sanding. If you live on a busy quay, also allow for Sneekweek in August. We prefer to put scaffolding in that spot before or after it. Just tell us your preference, and we will shift the work around it.

A few photos get us a long way, and you can simply send them via WhatsApp. This is what we like to see:

• each facade separately, including the water side if there is one
• a close-up of thresholds and the bottoms of doors
• the year of construction and the year of the last paint job
• whether the back can be reached via an alley or only via the water or the neighbours
• the colour you have now and the colour you want

The difference here mostly lies in the condition of the thresholds, access on the waterside and the number of glazing bars and small panes. Our own scaffolding has a fixed price, so no daily hire that climbs when it rains for a week. On homes that are two years old or older, 9 percent Dutch VAT applies to the painting.

Around the Kleinzand and the Grootzand there is often a business downstairs and a home above it. Then more than the paint alone counts. We plan work on a shopfront in consultation, so your customers can still get past and your window doesn't disappear behind scaffolding sheeting for days.

The Dutch VAT works differently too. Since 1 July 2025 a mixed-use building is split: 9 percent on the residential part, 21 percent on the rest. We list that item by item on the quote, so your accountant can work with it straight away. Work for businesses doesn't put us off: in Stavoren we even painted a harbour crane.
