In short

In Burgum we paint window frames and doors, and help you choose the colour that suits the facade. If the wood is sound, almost any colour is possible, from white RAL 9010 to anthracite RAL 7016. After the site visit MJA Allround Bouw gives you a fixed quote for the agreed work.

Your frames set the face of your house

Burgum is the main village of Tytsjerksteradiel, on the Burgumer Mar and the Prinses Margrietkanaal, with the chimneys of the power station in the distance. The village has homes from many different periods. In a row of the same brick, it is often the colour of the frames that makes the difference.

That is why the conversation here is often about colour. A new shade changes the whole house, for just as many metres of painting. What we do in the area can be found under Drachten.

White, anthracite or black: what does it do to your facade?

White RAL 9010 is the safe choice and makes a brick facade look fresh. On RAL 9010 or cream white you can see the difference, because on an older home cream white can be calmer. Anthracite RAL 7016 looks crisp and modern, and black RAL 9005 gives a lot of contrast.

Note: dark colours get warmer in the sun, and the wood moves more as a result. The south and west sides then need extra attention. We explain that in advance, so you know what you are choosing.

First the wood, then the colour

Even the most beautiful colour doesn't last long on a poor surface. That is why we probe the corners and lower thresholds of every frame. Open joints and peeling paint are signs that more is going on.

When your frames are due, you can read under when to paint your frames. In Leeuwarden, for example, we repaired wood rot, and after that all the frames and doors were painted. That is the order that works.

Frames on the south and west sides are usually due first, in Burgum too, where the wind comes freely over the lake and the canal. If you want to do part first, start there. Do bear in mind that with a new colour you will see the difference for a while.

From light to dark colour, and the other way round

A colour change sometimes needs more preparation. From dark to white you must allow for an extra coat to cover the old colour. From white to dark is often easier, but every flaw shows in high gloss. So we look closely at how flat the wood is and set the gloss level accordingly.

Don't forget the front door and the glazing beads either: they should join in the colour, or deliberately differ. We discuss that at the site visit, with your facade in front of us.

Show us this in advance

Send a photo of the whole facade in daylight, and a few close-ups. Count your frames and doors, or write down how many there are at the front, back and sides. Add which colour you have now and which one you have in mind.

If you have a photo of a house you like, send that too. It is easier to talk about than a colour code. During the site visit we look at the surface and agree the rest. A photo of the neighbours is fine too, if you want to keep matching the row.

Price per frame: what counts

The number of frames, the condition of the wood, the colour change and the access determine the price. A national market indication is from €50 per exterior frame and from €35 per interior frame. If repair is needed, wood rot is from €50 per spot.

These are not MJA prices. With us you get a fixed price after the site visit. On painting work on a home that is two years old or older, 9 percent Dutch VAT applies, on a commercial building 21 percent.

A colour change counts because an extra coat is sometimes needed, but that difference is usually smaller than between a good and a poor frame. If you have all the frames done at once, you get an even colour and the scaffolding only has to come once.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we get most often, with an honest answer.

Can I simply give my frames a different colour?

Usually yes, as long as the wood is in order. For a monument or in a protected area a permit may be needed. A homeowners' association often has rules on colours, so check that in advance.

Is anthracite bad for wooden frames?

Not necessarily. Dark colours get warmer in the sun and the wood moves more as a result. With good preparation and the right paint it works fine, but on the south and west sides we look extra carefully.

How do I know whether my frames need painting?

Look for peeling paint, open joints and spots that have gone dull. Feel free to probe the bottom with a screwdriver. If it feels soft, have it looked at.

How do I choose the right colour for my facade?

During the site visit we discuss the colours on site, because a colour looks different on your own facade than on a card. That way you choose with the real house in front of you.
